Social Justice Event

On October 10th, the class was required to attend the Student-Centered Research Collaborative. It was held at the Biltmore Hotel in Providence, RI.

I learned quite a few new things, but I will mention those later. The first thing I would like to mention is at the start of my day. I arrived fifteen minutes early, and parked in the Providence Place Mall parking garage, to avoid parking in the wrong place, traffic, etc. I ended up getting lost,  due to the fact that the mall was closed. My initial plan was to go through the mall and find the Biltmore that way, but I had to go another way that I wasn't familiar with, and ended up getting lost.

Fast forward to when I finally find the hotel. Im already late, and am informed that it's on the seventeenth floor. Okay, no big deal. I didn't know, though, that there were multiple workshops, and that the class was scattered all over the place. So I walked into one conference, and there were all adults. I sit there, patiently and politely for a little while, as to not disrupt anything. However, I was sure I was in the wrong place, so after a few minutes, I got up and left.

While searching for a new workshop, I went to talk to the lady at the sign in table. She told me most of my classmates had gone into the room right across from her, so that's where I went. There, I learned a lot. Specifically, about the four types of learning. I learned about competency based learning, any time, anywhere learning, personalized learning, and student owned learning I will link the slides that our instructor gave us here.

After this one was over, we moved onto the next. There, about five classmates and I were surrounded by adults and administration. They were all much older than us, and must more versed in this sort of stuff. I, as well as just about every other classmate, felt very out of place. We felt as though we didn't belong. Being the youngest, and without a job in the education system, I'm sure you can see why.

Overall, I learned a lot in my first workshop. And I enjoyed the good food at lunch time. (The lobster ravioli was fireπŸ‘ŒπŸ»πŸ‘ŒπŸ»). However, I felt very out of place and uncomfortable. Also, I got lost, so that did not help matters. I feel like this should not be done in the later semesters, and I feel as though it should be included in the class, to avoid any mishaps, confusion, or uncomfortableness. I did, however, get a free water bottle though, so again, πŸ‘ŒπŸ»πŸ‘ŒπŸ».
